Barack Obama, The Right Man For The Job
17 Feb 2009
I think we chose the right president.
Since this is Human Design month, I thought it would be fun to take a brief look at the Human Design chart of Barack Obama:

Obama, is a Projector. His main job in life is to guide and direct others, but only when he is recognized and/or invited to do so. When you look at the history of how Obama made it into office, he was clearly invited into running for president.
After a rousing speech at the 2004 National Democratic Convention (a natural thing for a person with an undefined Throat Center and the gate 56, the Gate of the Storyteller), Obama began drawing large crowds who began to ask the inevitable question, “When are you running for president?”
Like a good emotional Projectore, Obama consulted many friends and mentors (as well as his wife) about his decisions. Projectors need to talk about their choices with others and see their choices reflected through others before they can make decisions. As an emotionally defined person, this was not a decision that could be made in the moment. Obama needed time to get clarity.
After a lot of reflection, Obama decided that now was the time.
As his only channel defined is way down at the bottom of his chart and far away from this Throat Center (the energy center for communication and action), it is difficult for him to speak clearly about what is important to him unless he is asked first.
When he speaks without recognition, he inclined to be perceived as an idealistic dreamer with the 41/30 defined (the channel of Fantasy and Desire). When he is asked, his dreams inspire people and give them hope. As a sixth line profile (6/2 – The Role Model/Hermit) his natural place is to be in front and inspire people. But, it probably wasn’t always this way. His leadership role was mastered through years of experimentation and even “failing”.
(The sixth line profile has a tri-phasic life cycle. The first phase, from birth the age 30, is a time of extreme trial and error – all the wrong friend, wrong choices, wrong jobs, etc. The second phase from age 30-50 is a time of watching others to see what works. This can be a time of quiet learning and focus. The third phase, which starts at age 50, is a time of integrating what didn’t work with what was learned from watching. At 50 the sixth line profile emerges as the full-fledged role model.)
As a sixth line profile, Obama is almost ready to come out as a role model. I am guessing that if we think he is great now, wait a few years. Our impression of him will most likely go up, if he continues to honor his Projector strategy of waiting to be recognition and invitation.
When we look at the top four gates in Obama’s chart, we are looking at the energies that comprise 70% of his personality. We see from the Gates 1 (The Creative Role Model) and 2 (The Keeper of the Keys) in his unconscious Design that he is designed to make a contribution by managing, guiding and directing resources. We see from the 19 and the 33 that Obama’s leadership style is sensitive and he takes people to a place of retreat from chaos.
So through guiding and directing resources, Obama is on a personal mission to create order (and respite) from chaos.
In Human Design, the moon contains the elements that drive you. We see from the Gate 38 (Knowing What’s Worth Struggling For) and 20 (Recognizing the Skills and Talents of Others) in Obama’s moon that he is driven to recognize the talents and skills of others and co-opts these talents into a mission that recognizes what is worth fighting for. He picks the right people to fight the battles he has carefully chosen and recognized to be of importance in creating order and appropriately managing resources.
His north node theme, which became active around his fortieth birthday is a theme of being committed to defending his people. Again, we see clearly here, a design of a man who recognizes what it takes to provide for his people and is driven to unify a team to do whatever it takes to create the resources necessary to provide for his “tribe”.
Mercury indicates what we are here to communicate. Obama has the Gate 2 and the Gate 31 (Democratic Leadership) in his mercury indicating that he is here to communicate his leadership by helping others best use their resources. (Are we seeing a coherent theme here, yet?)
Venus is all about what we value. In Venus, Obama, has the Gate 21 and the Gate 15. He values a deep love for humanity and in expressing that love, he helps others use and manage their material resources. (Surprise, surprise…)
Mars is where we have lessons and where we gain maturity. Obama has his Mars in the Gate 56 (the Gate of the Story Teller) and the Gate 47 (the Gate of Oppression). One of Obama’s weak points (other than his extreme sensitivity) is his tendency to share too much or talk too much (and, with an open Throat Center, not feel heard) and to battle a negative mindset. The beauty of Mars is that when we master these lessons, they become part of our wisdom.
So, with experience and wisdom, Obama has hopefully learned to use storytelling as part of his oratory gifts and to hold a vision of a positive future filled with hope and potential for all.
Jupiter is where we see growth and expansion in our lives. Obama has the Gate 41 (the Gate of Fantasy) and 60 (Evolution) in his Jupiter. With this combination we see that over time, Obama’s capacity to dream and dream big has evolved and his visions and daydreams about where he can lead his people have probably grown as he has matured.
Saturn is the “punisher” planet but it is through the “punishment” Saturn that we move all the things that do not serve our Life Path out of the way. We are “punished” by Saturn but it here that we gain our greatest gifts and wisdom.
Obama has the 60 (Evolution) and the 61 (Reaching to Know the Unknowable) in his Saturn. As we know that Obama is a dreamer of sorts, we can guess from this configuration that sometimes Obama’s thinking may be way ahead of his time and the cutting-edge ideas he is seeking to transmit, falls on deaf ears or is misunderstood by others.
As Obama is a Projector, hopefully he has learned to cast his idea “pearls” before an appreciative audience. When he is invited, his innovative understandings of the magnitude of Life are heard, appreciated and applied. His Jupiter is his reward and his big dreams come to fruition.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are generational planets. The themes of these planets are not as personal.
Uranus indicates where we are unique. Obama has his Uranus in the Gate 4 (The Gate of Answers) and the Gate 29 (the Gate of Commitment). He is committed to finding answers but, as this is Uranus, the answers may be unique and different. His generation is on a quest for new and unique answers. In Obama’s case, it will be new answers for how to use resources to take care of people.
Neptune is a mysterious planet. The energies of Neptune often indicate the path of our spiritual growth. Obama’s Neptune is in the Gate 44 (Understanding the Lessons of the Past). It is through understanding the lessons of the past, that Obama comes up with new ways of doing things. He has a deep understanding of what has come before and what worked and what needs to be made new.
Pluto is a plane of expansion. Our Pluto energies indicate where we have growth on a generation level. Obama’s generation has the 40 (the Gate of a Part Seeking a Whole) and the Gate 59 (The Gate of Defense) in Pluto indicating that collectively there may be a sacrifice of the self to defend the tribe for the greater good of the tribe OR that this generation my go down fighting for the rights of the Self and that self-actualization will lead to a new way for tribes to come together, bringing new ways of uniting as tribes (and families) together.
Given Obama’s penchant for finding new ways to allocate resources, Obama may serve as a catalytic leader who finds new ways for individuals to fulfill their potential so that they, in turn can make a greater contribution to the good of the whole.
But, with this energy, you can be certain that Obama has often felt like an outsider looking in. Even as president, loneliness may always be Obama’s companion.
Chiron is the planetoid that carries the energy of the wounded healer. Chiron indicates our spiritual purpose but it isn’t revealed to us until we have a lifetime (50 years) of struggling with our spiritual wounds. Obama’s Chiron is in the 55 (the Gate of Abundance) and the 37 (The Gate of Harmony).
Here we see that Obama’s own struggles with abundance, in form as well as in spirit, has disrupted his peace of mind. In his childhood and youth he may have struggled with money or spiritual abundance and been deeply impacted by the lack of abundance in others. His sense of abundance drives him to create abundance, not only for himself, but for the world. And it is doing this that he creates harmony, finds his place and his peace of mind.
This is the design of man who will not know peace of mind until everyone has eaten and has the resources to grow and thrive. It is his spiritual directive.
Given the financial challenges facing the country at this time, I really do think we’ve picked the right guy for the job!
